Alex Chilton — Ocean Club ‘77 (Norton)
Alex Chilton’s career, like any that spans a lifetime, divides into phases. He was a teen idol in the Box Tops; an ambitious pop striver in Big Star and the diverse projects he tried to get off the ground in the 70s; a generator and facilitator of exhilarating chaos on Like Flies Sherbert and behind the boards for the Panther Burns and early Cramps; and a cynically skilled, occasionally brilliant human jukebox for the last quarter-century of his life. Ocean Club ’77 catches him transitioning between chapters two and three, and also foreshadows the best parts of chapter four.
